About Us
The Raven Bowling Club was formed with Players from Stetchford Hall Park, Some of the founder members were players who had transfered to Stechford Hall Park from The Bromford Pub & Brookvale Park Teams.
The players used to drink & socialise at the Raven Pub when the gaffer (George Horwell) at that time suggested we use the land at the rear of the pub, the then Chairman (Brian Barden) & Secretary (Dave Pratt) chose the position of the green and work began building the green.
Much work was done pulling out laurel bushes, filling in deep hollows and the groundsman (Don Proctor) poured his life & soul into creating a playable surface.
The Raven was known as one of the few greens with 5 corners! in those days corners had to be marked with marker posts
The Club was formed by tranferring a team in the mid-week league only and was known in line with league rules as Stechford Hall Park/Raven then the next year the remaining teams followed.
In time to come the club eventually became The Raven Bowling Club.
There was a short (10 year period) when the club changed name when the new pub lease owners changed the name of the pub to The Weir, But as soon as their lease ran out the Owners of the lease renamed the pub back to its familier and traditional name of the Raven, so the name of the bowling team transferred back to The Raven Bowling Club.
The bowling club remains the major contributor towards the Raven Sports teams and has many links with darts, domino, fishing and football teams that have run from the pub throughout the years.
In the early days of the bowling club we formed a domino team playing 5's & 3's in a league, many players were new to the league format and perhaps that helped the bowling club domino team winning the first entry to the league.
